Drawing simple landscapes with pen and ink is a great way to spend your time creatively and is surprisingly easy to learn. In these drawing tutorials, I will show you step by step how you can draw different elements of nature like trees, stones, mountains, water, cloud etc and combine them to create pleasing landscapes. One main hurdle for any new comer to art is how to begin. With that in mind, I provide ‘templates‘,  that can be used to practice drawing with pen and ink. By ‘template’, I mean a ‘lightened’ version of my drawing in which the lines are faintly visible. These templates provide a great starting point as you don’t have to worry about the composition but simply pick up a pen and practice pen lines and marks based on accompanying instructions.

As with any art, practice is key to improving. The ‘templates’ will make it easier for you to get started but your improvement will depend on the practice you put in it. Any good gel black pen in the beginning will do. My aim is to give you an easy start but then you should follow your creative instincts.

You can also Subscribe to receive my weekly emails that demonstrate how do a simple drawing in easy step by step manner. These are great for regular practice and to get weekly inspiration. See a sample here.

Detailed step by step illustrated tutorials with templates to practice are provided for drawing following elements:

Composition Themes with Video Demonstrations:

After learning to draw elements individually in tutorials, next step is to learn how pleasing compositions can be done by using different elements together. This is covered here along the with video demonstration of the steps involved. Following are some of the compositions that are covered along with their video demonstration on my YouTube channel.

Mini Landscapes:

After completing tutorials and learning about compositions, you can find further examples in ‘mini landscapes’ to further practice drawing elements of nature and to build your confidence in initial stages of learning. These can be completed in relatively short time and are really fun and satisfying to do. There are over 20 mini landscapes available to practice along with their templates. Following are some of them.

Step by Step Landscape Drawing:

You can create your first full landscape by following in a step by step manner here.

Advanced Landscape Templates:

I have 2 Levels of templates. Level 1 is for the beginners and focuses on simple landscapes that are bit more involved than mini landscapes. Instructions are provided for finishing the templates but the  expectation is that the user will study tutorials and my finished work to understand the kind of strokes used and incorporate them in their attempt. Level 2 templates are for more advanced users.

Level 1 templates are simple enough and can be attempted without any experience of drawing with pen. After attempting them, you can then study individual elements in depth in the tutorials. Instructions are provided in all cases.

Remember that  every person has their own unique style for pen lines and hence their finished work will have their own uniqueness. You should NOT aim to get your finished work mimicking mine, but rather focus on understanding the kind of pen strokes used and apply them to the templates to create finished work that reflects your creativity. Don’t get discouraged. If the results are not to your liking, then try again.

Level 1 Templates:

Following Level 1 templates are currently available. Click here to download them and to get instructions for finishing them.

Level 2 Templates:

Level 2 templates are for more advance users and following 3 templates are currently available.
