How to Draw Wooden Post with Pen and ink

In this post, I will describe how to draw wooden posts. They add charm to any landscape and are great for enhancing visual interest in a scene. Techniques and strokes for drawing wooden posts are very similar to techniques for drawing tree trunks and it would be helpful to consult drawing tree trunk tutorial if you haven’t done so already.

Drawing Wooden Post Stroke: Small Wandering Lines

This stroke is same as that used for texturing tree trunk and can be very effectively used for drawing wooden posts as well as shown below. Add crevices to the body and top to bring out the weathered nature and age of the post. As with a tree trunk, darken one side more to bring out the roundness of the post.

Stroke: Tapered Crevices

Tapered crevices are usually added with another stroke where the stroke conveys bark texture and crevices gives a feeling of roughness and age. But crevices can themselves be used to draw a wooden post with a very weathered look as shown below. In this technique, the focus is on crevices in weathered wood which are drawn and the remaining bark texture is implied.

Drawing Wooden Fence:

A wooden fence is a great composition element that can be used in foreground in any landscape to give it focal interest and charm. Draw the posts at an angle and connect them with a barbed wire to draw a fence as shown below. More age can be added to posts using techniques discussed above to indicate decaying status of fence.

Level of Tone:

Same technique/stroke can be used with different intensity/tone level to create different feel. Following is a drawing of wooden fence with lighter tone compared to drawing above but is based on same technique. There should be good inter play of different tones in your drawing to create visual contrast and attract viewer’s attention. This is discussed in detail in my pen and ink drawing workbooks.
